We grew up in a part of the world where there are two things that keep you from sleeping until late in the mornings: the roosters and the omnipresent melodies usually coming from all directions, even in the early morning hours. It’s this music that provides some relief from the tough and unpleasant routine of poverty. Music provides respite: at least everyone has the power to choose the radio station they hear during lunch, even when for some people their plate of food looks the same every day.

Current Segment: Microfundo correspondent Amy Bracken talks with Sofia Rei Koutsovitis of the Afro-Peruvian group Avantrio. Sofia Rei Koutsovitis likes to sing. I mean really sing. She has since she was a little girl growing up in Buenos Aires. Koutsovitis has developed an interest in Afro-Peruvian rhythms and this is something she is persuing with a percussionist and bassist in their new Avantrio project.
Current Segment: Microfundo correspondent Amy Bracken talks with Sofia Rei Koutsovitis of the Afro-Peruvian group Avantrio. KOUTSOVITIS: "It's a very interesting setting because there is no harmonic instrument - there is no piano or guitar so the quality of the sound of the trio is something very particular and every time we play people get really, really interested by it because you can hear so well each of us doing what we're doing and it's like a very raw sound."

Choose a Musician's Campaign, Lend, Get Repaid
1. Music Fans like you can browse Campaigns of Musicians and choose an artist to lend to. When you lend, using Paypal or your credit card, Microfundo collects the funds and then passes them along to the artist once they've reached their goal.
